presence.el is an Emacs package that adds a presence indicator and simple messaging to the modeline, using a WebSocket connection to a presence server. It lets users see friends' statuses (online, busy, away, offline) and send short messages without leaving the editor, with hooks for desktop notifications and other integrations. The project is interesting for its clean protocol design and practical utility within the Emacs ecosystem.
